The Library of the Municipal Heritage Museum of Vis was established in 2025 as the Museum’s specialized library, representing a dedicated collection for the research and preservation of the cultural and historical heritage of the island of Vis.
Upon its establishment, the library possessed a collection of 2,680 inventory numbers of professional and scientific literature, journals, proceedings, and other publications. The collection currently contains 2,057 monographs and 623 serial publications (whose corresponding issues are collectively inventoried by year, totaling 1,234 copies) and small print items (127 copies), making a total of 3,416 items.
The library collection includes books, proceedings, exhibition catalogs, archival materials, professional and scientific works in the fields of archaeology, history, ethnology, art history, as well as literature, maritime studies, geography, political science, and numerous reference works.
The library is primarily intended for experts, researchers, students, and museum collaborators, but it is also available to all interested citizens by prior arrangement. The library collection is continuously supplemented through donations, exchanges with other institutions, and the acquisition of new editions. All visitors may use the materials in the museum’s reading room, while borrowing outside the library premises is currently not possible.

During the Last Glacial Maximum (20,000 years ago), the sea level in the Adriatic was 100-120 m lower than today, making Vis an elevation of that same landmass. With climate change, the ice retreated, and the sea gradually flooded the lowlands in the Holocene (12,000 years ago), transforming the elevations into islands. Vis is thus a relatively “young” island in a geographical sense, but the rocks from which it is formed are many times older.
